- Rules:
Rolling Substitution Rule:
- The rolling substitution stands at the designated area. The designated zone for rolling substitutions is delineated by lines marked on the ground at each end of the team’s bench.
- On indoor courts, this area is situated alongside the score bench.
- On outdoor courts, it is positioned near the scorers standing in the middle of the court.
- Before leaving the designated area, the substitute tags (with hands) the player leaving the court.
- Only one (1) rolling substitute per team can be made at a time.
- Play is not to be held up for rolling substitutions. If play is delayed, the player will be penalised under Rule 19.2. Delaying play.
- Players must observe the offside rules as they enter/leave the court.
- Sanction: Free pass where the infringement occurred (advantage may be applied if this would place the non-offending team at a disadvantage).
- Players must not interfere with the umpire’s movement during the substitution. Sanction: Free pass where the ball was when play was stopped (advantage may be applied)
- If a player leaves the court as a rolling substitution, and there is no player in the designated area, the replacement player is treated as a late player and must wait until a break in play to enter the court.
Things to consider:
- It’s easier to have two (2) sets of identical bibs to facilitate rolling subs.
- It’s important to time the subs so as not to interfere with play.
- Stoppage for injury/illness remains as per rule book and substitutions/team changes can occur at this time.
- Common sense is required when using with juniors or during introductory period.
- Scorers, please ensure they tick players who take to the court during each quarter.
