2024 Rule Change

2024 Rule Change

Welcome back for the 2024 Autumn Season!  The new season will start off with MENA competitions adopting most of the new World Netball Rules (The Rules of Netball – World Netball) starting Friday 2nd Feb 2024. Since we use centralised timing, as per the Netball Victoria recommendation we will adopt Rolling Substitutions and NOT the tactical change rule.

We encourage you all to read through the following information detailing the changes to the rules, as well as watching the rule videos explaining the rule changes.   We also invite you to the information sessions outlining the new netball rules.

New Rule Workshops – Saturday 3rd Feb

Jo Davidson will be presenting 3 workshop sessions on Saturday 3rd February – Grading Round 1.  The sessions will be at 8.50am; 11.20am & 1.50pm.  Sessions will be 45 minutes and held in the Multipurpose Room – Upstairs at Maroondah Nets.   We recommend all Coaches and Team Managers attend.  Players and parents are welcome to attend.

Rolling Substitutions

See information below

Understand Rolling Substitutions

  1. The rolling substitution stands at the designated area.  The designated zone for rolling substitutions is delineated by lines marked on the ground at each end of the team’s bench.
    1. On indoor courts, this area is situated alongside the score bench.
    2. On outdoor courts, it is positioned near the scorers standing in the middle of the court.
  2. Before leaving the designated area, the substitute tags (with hands) the player leaving the court.
  3. Only one (1) rolling substitute per team can be made at a time.
  4. Play is not to be held up for rolling substitutions. If play is delayed, the player will be penalised under Rule 19.2. Delaying play.
  5. Players must observe the offside rules as they enter/leave the court.
  6.  Sanction: Free pass where the infringement occurred (advantage may be applied if this would place the non-offending team at a disadvantage).
  7. Players must not interfere with the umpire’s movement during the substitution. Sanction: Free pass where the ball was when play was stopped (advantage may be applied)
  8. If a player leaves the court as a rolling substitution, and there is no player in the designated area, the replacement player is treated as a late player and must wait until a break in play to enter the court.

Things to consider:

  • It’s easier to have two (2) sets of identical bibs to facilitate rolling subs.
  • It’s important to time the subs so as not to interfere with play.
  • Stoppage for injury/illness remains as per rule book and substitutions/team changes can occur at this time.
  • Common sense is required when using with juniors or during introductory period.
  • Scorers, please ensure they tick players who take to the court during each quarter.
