Walking Netball is a slower version of the game; it is netball, but at a walking pace. The game has been designed so anyone can play, regardless of age ability or fitness level. It’s a great way to stay active with minimal risk of injury and have fun!
The main aim for Rock up Casual Walking Netball Sessions is for players to:
- connect with others who enjoy netball.
- have fun
- keep active
- make friends
- enjoy netball.

Walking Netball casual sessions need to be delivered in a fun, relaxed and enjoyable environment. You play a big role to ensure you create this environment for everyone
Focus on:
- Enjoying it
- Be approachable
- Be interested in them
- Welcoming
- Friendly & caring
- Enthusiastic
- Laugh and bring your sense of humor and get them involved
- Smile
- Keep it light
- Keep it safe
- Use hand signals to help understanding.
- Make sure players can hear you – bring players closer. Face the players when delivering instructions.
- You may need to build on the activity. Start simple and add activities.
Some players may need some help on understanding the rules of Walking Netball. Make sure you help players understand the game by giving friendly feedback. Try not to over coach or focus on skills to the detriment of fun.
Keep the players and activities moving, use the whistle less and encourage more.
Even though the rules are relaxed make sure any rough, dangerous, persistent or deliberate rule breaking is dealt with. Its ok to manage player behavior in appropriate ways to make there is a good balance between managing the game and creating an enjoyable environment.
Make sure it is fun for everyone including you.
Walking Netball Rock up Casual Session
A casual Walking Netball session includes 4 parts:
- Warm Up
- Activities
- Game
- Wrap up
Warm up
Move with Music for 3 – 5 minutes- gentle exercise to get the body moving and mimic movements in the game:
- Walking
- Weaving walking
- Walk back and forth
- Reach down
- Side step
- Grape vine
- Pivot
- Arm circles
- Sweeps
You could talk about the weekend of netball, something topical like grand final/easter, events.
Activities
For all age groups choose 2 – 3 activities (15 – 20 mins) & ror the over 65s choose 3 activities (20mins):
- Passing activity
- Moving/Game like activity
- Goal shooting
Make sure there is time for participants to have a drink, rest, visit the bathrooms and have a chat between activities.
Game
Each Walking Netball game ranges from 30 to 45 minutes, dependent on the quarter length. The recommended quarter length varies from 6 minutes to 8 minutes. Be sure to factor in time to appropriately warm up. Rest time should be 2 minutes betwee each ‘quarter’.
Adapt game for group numbers:
- 7 : half court with C playing for both teams.
- 8 : Half court
- 9 : 5 a side faciliator play the game
- 10 : 5 a side – no GS/GK. WA/WD can shoot and go in the goal circle
- 11 – 5 v 6 (C play for both teamas
- 12: 6 a side – No WD/WA
- 14 : Full court 2 teams
- More than 14 : Use rolling subs.
- 20 : if 2 courts are available play 5 a side
- 21 : 7 teams and rolling team on and off for 3 minutes each
- 21 or more : if 2 courts are available play on 2 courts
- 21 – 5 v 5 and 5 v 6 (C play for both teams)
- 22 – 5 v 5 and 6 v 6
- 23 – 6 v 5 (C play for both teams) and 6 v 6
- 24 – 6 v 6 and 6 v 6
- 25 – 7 v 6 (C play for both teams) and 6 v 6
- 26 – 7 v 6 and 7 v 6 (C play for both teams)
- 27 – 7 v 7 and 7 v 6 (C play for both teams)
- 28 – 7 v 7 and 7 v 7
Variations
- Super shot – sing while you shoot/shoot from outside the goal circle
- Street Netball – 2 teams only 2 people from each team can be in the goal circle
Wrap up & wind down
- Thank players for game. Maybe highlight something you enjoyed.
- Celebrate the successes in the session.
- Invite them to share their favorite part of the session.
- Reminder players about the next session.
- Invite them to have a coffee in the cafe.
- Remind them you can come and ask questions.
- Wish them well for the week and say see you later.
